NINA O'FARRELL COACHING

Be Your Best Self

HannahPalamaraphotography-03370.jpg

ABOUT ME

I have been working as a coach since 2015, when I left my 15 year career as a senior manager in the charity sector, working for organisations such as VSO, UNICEF UK and Christian Aid.

The thread running through my work has been a passion for working with people, helping them to be happier and more effective. Coaching has always been central to how I work and now it is what I do for work. I am deeply committed to gender equality and social justice. I love working with clients to realise their potential whilst achieving balance, fulfilment and happiness.

I have coached for a wide range of individuals and organisations including King's College London, Moonpig, The British Asian Trust, Frontline AIDS, Arm, 64 Million Artists and The Coaching School. I have three children who keep me on my toes and have brought new wonder and challenge to how I live my life and career.

WHAT IS COACHING?

I asked my then 4 year old what he thought coaching was and, after a short pause and thoughtful tilt of the head, he replied:

“It’s when one person runs alongside another.”

This is a pretty good description of how I work. I work alongside my clients, listening carefully, asking open, clear questions, supporting them to shift perspectives and make changes. I provide space, challenge, perceptiveness and playfulness to help clients make changes in their work and lives. I don’t provide the answers, but work with my clients to do this for themselves.

And if a 4 year old’s description is not quite authoritative enough, here is the official International Coaching Federation version which describes coaching as:
'partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.'

WHO I WORK WITH

I work with a range of clients with diverse backgrounds, but I specialise in working with clients in the charity, not-for-profit and social sectors.

This includes working with coachees to develop their careers, address work challenges, negotiate work/life/family balance and transition coaching. Some of the areas I have worked on with clients include:

  • Increasing confidence inside and outside of work

  • Developing leadership and management skills

  • Progressing career and achieving promotion

  • Becoming more productive at work and at home

  • Negotiating life and career transitions

  • Balancing career progression with having a family

  • Changing careers and developing a long-term career plan

  • Renegotiating work after having children

  • Turning ideas into action

I also work with clients towards realising their true potential, being happier, more fulfilled and living the life they dream of.

WHAT DOES COACHING WITH ME LOOK LIKE?

  • I provide an initial free consultation of 45 minutes

  • I meet with clients usually for 60 minute sessions

  • Sessions usually take place every 2-4 weeks and can either be ongoing or for a set block of sessions

  • Coaching can be face to face, by skype or on the telephone

  • I sometimes set assignments/exercises

If I meet with you face to face, it is usually in Central London or Kent. How I coach depends on each client’s preferences and objectives for their work with me – I am flexible and adaptable and so this approach can vary from client to client.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT ME

"Nina is an excellent and highly skilled coach!  I looked forward to every session and came out of the very rich sessions feeling more focused and much more excited about my work and the potential for my future. She gave me the space and guidance to focus on how to best utilise my strengths and realise my vision, in leadership and for my work.  Importantly, I was able to be my whole self in our sessions. She actively practices inclusion, and my personal growth and wellbeing were always central in our discussions.  I started out thinking I had clarity on what I needed to do and where I was going.  She took me beyond what I had envisioned, and the progress I made has truly surprised and inspired me." Stephani, Professor

“I felt like we had really good chemistry which helped massively. I felt very at ease very early on so I felt like I could open up which is important in this process. Your coaching style has made me choose my career which is exactly what I wanted! You are approachable, friendly and supportive.” Alison, working mum

“I think you know that the coaching experience has been fantastic for me. Your pace, your kindness, the note struck between personal and professional support - these were all perfect.” Zoe, teacher and mum

“Nina is a wonderful coach, a delight to converse with, and she successfully drew out some key answers for areas of my life which I had not realised before. She helped me form concrete strategies for making real progress, so that I can indeed strive towards the full potential of my life's purpose.” Andrew, Senior Academic

“Nina is a fantastic coach! Her honest, supportive approach has enabled me to challenge the beliefs I have about myself in my work, boost my self-confidence and adapt my management style. Coming from an international development field herself, Nina has excellent content expertise and can therefore relate to the situations and feelings I discuss and provide insightful and relevant reflections. Nina is incredibly personable, friendly and motivating and I always come away from our sessions with greater determination and a sense of clarity and calmness. I would highly recommend her as a coach.” Rebecca, Senior Manager, charity sector

“You are supportive in a gentle, but genuine way: there is no doubt that you are interested and supportive. That creates a safe and trusted space, that feels really natural to you. You gave me space to explore, but you were in control all the time, applying just the right amount of pressure to keep me moving and not let me be too safe, whilst keeping it my agenda. You opened some questions for me, helping me to get where I wanted to get to on issues, which have led to more and more action for me as time goes on.” Robbie, Coach, Leadership Professional

“The sessions felt focused but still free, a really great balance. You took time to understand how I liked to work, including the exercises set between sessions, and find ways that would encourage me, rather than feel like a burden of tasks to do. I felt like you guided me, sometimes very subtly, just asking the right questions, focusing my thoughts and drawing my attention to what I'd said. I feel calmer, and more focused, without so much noise and resistance. It's as though I've been able to breathe out and finally feel at peace with what I want to do and how I'll get there. I have a new sense of clarity and purpose, and a firmer belief in myself that I have the power and ability to achieve the things I want.” Rowan, artist

“What I feel I have achieved is more objectivity in facing work situations and working out more strategically what I can do and what is worth doing. Having time to reflect on what I have achieved has made me more confident, now I can start looking ahead to what's next. I think you are very facilitative and truly not judgemental when approaching a person, that is very important. You are a really good listener who can also direct the person to think about what practical actions would help. I felt like once I found what those actions were it was too difficult to go back to not knowing what they were.” Chiara, Policy Officer, charity sector
